Save money on gas and electricity: How I cut my bills by over £300

by mortgagefreebythesea on Jun 19, 2020 category Bills, Money Saving in the Home, Save Money

If I offered to pay you £300 for a couple of hours of work would you do it? Of course you would! By changing your gas and electricity provider you could potentially save hundreds. For years I put off changing my supplier because it felt like too much of a hassle. If I’d realised how easy it was to save money on my gas and electricity bills then I’d have done it much sooner. If you’d like to see how much you could save then read on…

My story – how I cut my bills by over £300

I’ve always looked for ways to save money, but as a single female living on her own I thought that my combined monthly gas and electricity bill of £100 was pretty low, especially when I compared it to what my friends and family were paying. It was only when I kept seeing adverts for the moneysavingexpert.com ‘Cheap Energy Club‘ that I decided to sign up. I was curious to see if I could save money on my gas and electricity bills and squeeze just a little bit more from my already tight budget. I was on a mission to become mortgage free so every penny saved went into my overpayment pot.

I registered for the ‘club’, entered my meter readings and was amazed at how much it was telling me that I could save. The top quote came from Bulb, a relatively new company who claimed to offer ‘green’ energy. They quoted me £70 – a saving of £30 per month compared to what I was currently paying! I was sceptical, especially when they were also offering a £50 account credit for signing up, plus there was no contract period. It felt too good to be true, but the thought of having an extra £360 per year to put towards the mortgage made me take the chance. That was almost 3 years ago and I’ve never looked back.

Are you up for the challenge?

If you’re ready to keep more money in your pocket and see how much you can save on your gas and electricity bills, then follow the simple steps below:

  1. Take your gas and meter readings.
  2. Find your most recent energy bill – you’ll be asked for your energy usage. If you don’t have this but can access the previous months readings online, then make a note of these OR take your readings today, then in a months time before proceeding to step 3.
  3. Sign up for moneysavingexpert.com’s ‘Cheap Energy Club’ here and enter your details. Uswitch is an alternative you may want to try but I have never used it.
  4. See how much you can save and sign up with your new supplier.
  5. Sit back and let them do all the work – happy days!

Fancy making £50?

If Bulb turn out to be the cheapest supplier for you, then it would help me out if you’d sign up using my referral link which can be found here. They’ll give us both £50*. Alternatively you can sign up without using a referral link at www.bulb.co.uk – you’ll still get £50 but I wont*. *This information is correct at the time of writing. They’ve run this offer since I joined three years ago, so it’s pretty consistent.

Update – In 2021, Bulb increased their prices quite significantly, so I’ve now switched to Igloo and managed to save £30 per month off my bills. If you sign up using my referral link, we’ll both get £50.

Make the switch and save money

Hopefully this post has inspired you to save money on your gas and electricity bills. Afterall, where else can you potentially make over £300 for just a few hours of work? A penny saved is a penny earned, so give it a try and let me know how you get on.

Psst…Don’t forget to update your budget accordingly. If you haven’t got one then check out my post on creating a budget.
