Design Your Future: Be conscious and avoid drift.

Design Your Future: Stop Living in Autopilot Mode

by mortgagefreebythesea on Aug 9, 2020 category Simple Sundays

I listened to a podcast this week that talked about the concept of ‘drift’. It was an interview with Dominick Quartuccio, author of Design Your Future.

I don’t often listen to podcasts more than once, but I’ve listened to this one numerous times and I still feel there’s so much more I can learn from it.

How to pay your mortgage off early

by mortgagefreebythesea on Aug 7, 2020 category Budgeting, Make Money, Save Money

Many people dream of paying off their mortgage early but don’t know where to start. Some assume that they need to be rich, while others think that they can’t afford to make overpayments. What people don’t realise is that it’s the small changes that make the biggest difference over time. You don’t need to be rich, you just need to be savvy. In this post I’ll share tips from my own journey to mortgage-freedom to give you some ideas for how you can begin to pay your mortgage off early.

FIRE Documentary: Financiall independent retire early and be free

Playing with FIRE Documentary: Creating A Life Less Ordinary

by mortgagefreebythesea on Aug 2, 2020 category Simple Sundays

I’m having a relaxing day today. My fiancee has been here for the week so we’ve adopted the Simple Sunday approach together.

We started the day with a long walk on the beach, followed by a leisurely breakfast and have pottered in the garden. It’s been so lovely to spend some time together as lockdown has kept us apart.

Last night we watched the Playing with FIRE documentary which sparked a discussion about our plans for the future. It turns out that we’re both on the same page and want to achieve financial independence so that we can spend our days doing the things we love.

We’re both quite frugal people and tend to value experiences more than things, so I’m looking forward to planning our FI journey.

Mortage Free now what? How to move forward when you're mortgage free.

So I’m mortgage free – now what?

by mortgagefreebythesea on Jul 31, 2020 category Save Money

Last August I made the final overpayment on my mortgage and became mortgage free. It felt amazing and brought with it the peace of mind that my home was now my own and no longer owned by the bank. I’d always envisioned having a big party once I paid it off, but now that I’d hit the milestone I decided against it. Many of my friends were heavily in debt and I didn’t want it to feel like I was gloating or ‘rubbing their noses in it’. So instead, I had a celebratory drink and takeaway with my nearest and dearest and that was that.

Louise Beech I Am Dust

Louise Beech – I Am Dust: A Beautiful and Life-Affirming Novel

by mortgagefreebythesea on Jul 26, 2020 category Simple Sundays

So it’s a slightly different Simple Sunday post today as I’m writing it in advance (oh the shame). It’s for a very good reason though as my fiancee, who I haven’t seen for months (not quite pre-lockdown but almost), is coming over to visit for a week. I’m so excited! I suspect our Sunday will involve a long walk along the beach, possibly a picnic, as well as lots of tea and time spent in the garden. I don’t want to shut myself away when our time together has been so limited, so I’m writing my post a day in advance.

Ok, so now that my confession is out of the way, in the spirit of Simple Sundays, I wanted to share something with you that I have been enjoying this week. I’ve been reading a wonderful book by Louise Beech called I Am Dust. It’s such a haunting and beautiful story, filled with suspense. I don’t want to give too much away but I’ll give you a very brief overview…
